NSF-IES INVITE AI Institute
The INVITE AI Institute focuses on advancing AI in education, with the goal of creating intelligent STEM learning environments that support learners in more nuanced ways than was possible in the past. It serves as a nexus for researchers, educators, and policymakers, aiming to develop and implement AI-enabled educational systems. The institute’s work includes foundational AI research, the creation of educational resources, and efforts to broaden participation in STEM fields. Key activities involve professional development for teachers, AI education for students, and the creation of a digital resource library.
What-if Hypothetical Implementations in Minecraft (WHIMC)
The WHIMC project utilizes Minecraft Java edition to explore and visualize hypothetical scenarios, primarily focusing on astronomy education and the creation of simulated exoplanets and alternative Earths. 1 It allows users to engage with and learn about complex astronomical concepts by interactively experiencing these hypothetical worlds. The project emphasizes the “what-if” aspect of scientific inquiry, fostering a deeper understanding of planetary science through immersive, hands-on exploration.
Creative Problem Solving in Minecraft (STEM+C)
The Creative Problem Solving in Minecraft project integrated STEM concepts with computational thinking within the Minecraft platform. It provides resources and information on how Minecraft can be used as an educational tool to teach subjects like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Challenging scenarios are provided for Minecraft players to use ComputerCraft to solve very hard STEM-related problems.
SCAPES / Agrivoltaics
The SCAPES project investigates sustainable agricultural practices, with a specific focus on agrivoltaics—the integration of solar energy production with crop cultivation. This initiative explores the potential of agrivoltaic systems to enhance both renewable energy generation and agricultural productivity. The project conducts research, develops educational tools, and engages in community outreach to promote the adoption of sustainable agrivoltaic practices. I led the educational research team where we developed of a AAA-quality mobile agrivoltaics game designed to educate and engage users about the benefits and complexities of this innovative approach to land use.
